Finding a Locksmith

After a break-in, you may need a locksmith urgently. Rogue locksmiths advertising online often charge £300–£1,000 for work that should cost much less, targeting people in vulnerable situations. Every locksmith listed on BSN holds a Government-recognised qualification and has passed background checks.

Searching for a locksmith

Go to burglarysupport.com/find-locksmith.

1. Type your postcode into the Search by postcode field.
2. Click Search.
3. A list of qualified locksmiths in your area will appear, showing their distance, contact details, and qualifications held.

If no results appear for your postcode, try a nearby postcode or contact BSN directly through the Contact page and we can help you find someone.

Checking qualifications

Each locksmith profile shows the qualifications they hold. Look for:

• MLA (Master Locksmiths Association) membership
• DBS checked — criminal record check completed

All locksmiths listed on BSN have been manually verified before they appear in search results.

Emergency situations

If you are locked out or cannot secure your property right now:

• Call 101 (non-emergency police) if you need evidence preserved at the scene
• Ask the locksmith for a written quote before they start work
• Do not pay in cash only — legitimate locksmiths accept card payment

Are you a locksmith?

Qualified locksmiths can register on BSN to be listed in the directory. Registration costs £20/year.

Alongside business and contact details, you’ll be asked for the postcode districts you cover and your accreditation details:

• MLA (Master Locksmith Association) membership number and expiry date
• DBS certificate number and expiry date
• Public liability insurance provider, policy number, and expiry date

Evidence documents for each are optional at registration — you can upload them now or add them from your profile afterwards. You’ll also need to accept BSN’s accreditation agreement: work fulfilled at the published price card, to the TS007 3★ anti-snap standard, within the stated SLA, and subject to the complaints route.

Registrations are reviewed by the BSN team before your listing goes live — you won’t appear in search results until an admin has checked your accreditation details.
